Angels whisper to a man when he goes for a walk.
Dr. Helen Kornblum was born and raised in Missouri, one of nine children who grew up understanding the importance of service from the example of her parents. She received her Medical Degree from University of Missouri Kansas City and has been practicing Emergency and Internal Medicine for 25 years. Her tenacious dedication is to her family, friends, AMIGA, her faith, and God who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us (Ephesians 3:20).
The first trip to Honduras was in 2005, and on this trip, Helen immediately fell in love with the country, the culture, and most of all the people. This affection has grown stronger with each of her 23 trips to Honduras, strengthening her commitment to and love for AMIGA. Four years of Latin did not help with Spanish, and Dr. Helen was very fortunate to need a translator in 2006, which is when she worked with Sr. Raquel in Honduras, providing a remarkably clearer insight to the culture and country. Friendship, partnership, and AMIGA were born on this trip.
Sr. Raquel Ortez was born and raised in Honduras. Sister Raquel became a School Sister of Notre Dame in 1989. She moved to the United States in 1997 and started helping the immigrant community in the area of St. Louis, Missouri. She is now grateful to be able to give back to her own country in many ways through AMIGA.
Both Sr. Raquel and Dr. Helen have a commitment to their call to serve the people of Honduras. On each mission trip they learn from each of the brigade members and as the AMIGA family grows, so do AMIGA’s roots grow deeper. These roots strengthen Sr. Raquel and Dr. Helen’s obligation to AMIGA, with a humble gratitude to MANY who make this mission possible, and their reverence to God’s Goodness that shines through many different people with many different talents and gifts. A Mission In God’s Amor is truly a mission of love and compassion, utilizing the many gifts we have each been afforded to give back to this world.
The sum of the whole is this: walk and be happy; walk and be healthy. The best way to lengthen our days is to walk steadily and with a purpose. The longest journey begins with a single step.
